"After participating in the team-building exercises with the class, I learned that an activity outside of the work environment could be useful in determining a person's strengths and weaknesses. These insights into a person can be useful in planning how to best utilize that person as part of the team at work. The fact that "heroes" realize in these experiences that they cannot do it all alone but need the input of their coworkers is very important."

"Prior to my involvement in this course, I was knowledgeable of only the market analysis when it was time to write the quarterly budget report. I did not look at things from the financial side like balance sheets, cash flow, and net profit. Now I find myself interacting more with the Controller in reporting YTD earnings and forecasting quarterly budget adjustments. He has even mentioned to me that I must be learning something in my class."

"One of the biggest things that I have gained thus far in the program is a much broader understanding of the aerospace industry as a whole. My interactions with the other students have allowed me to see the "Big Picture" instead of just my little piece of the puzzle. My new understanding of the flow of product from an airline or military order to the order for fuselages to the orders for engines that need my parts enables me to make better sales projections."

"I thought my organization was the only place where measuring business performance was so difficult. After reading Winning Score and attending Dr. Coleman's classes, I see that performance measurement is difficult in many organizations. Important business factors are hard to measure objectively and consistently. The opportunity to improve my organization's measurement system occurred to me after returning from RP1. During our monthly metric review I began to think.....how can we improve our measurement system to drive desired business behaviors? Since then, I have been thinking about ways to improve our performance metrics. The AMBA material is helping me accomplish this task. The program focuses learning activities around Lean, Six Sigma and Balanced Score Card systems versus traditional measurement systems. This new way of thinking opens the doors to improvement opportunity".

Oligopolies present very interesting competitive dynamics that are not always in favor of those companies that appear to have competitive advantage due to proprietary processes or information (e.g. intellectual property or distribution rights). Other competitive levers (e.g. service or market share) can create valuable leverage in the marketplace. Now, I spend more time searching for those levers rather than complaining about the competitive landscape.
Dec. 15 NPV & IRR are very valuable measures for making decisions that seem to make sense intuitively but when weighed economically are not attractive at all.
Jan. 14 Study of the economics of strategy and marketplace dynamics have reinforced that customers and competitors will attempt to drive your profits to zero. Keeping this in mind, it is easier to reinforce to the team the predominance of this dynamic and keep the emotions out of competition (e.g. the customer is trying to take advantage of us and doesn’t care about our business or the value we add to their business).
Jan. 28 Proper use and analysis of Discount Rates, NPV & IRR in project evaluation resulted in the rejection of a project which two months ago seemed like the correct strategy. This analysis has definitely changed the direction of a key strategic initiative.
Jan. 29 Traditional economic measures can not be used in all situations and the principles of Value Based Management highlight more recent approaches which I need to implement within my organization to provide better prediction of future economic performance.
